Zidovir is classified as a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), which falls under the category of antiretrovirals. While it cannot cure HIV infection, it lowers the viral load in the body by blocking the action of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme crucial for the virus's replication. Moreover, Zidovir also boosts the levels of certain white blood cells (CD4 cells) that play a vital role in combating infections.
Zidovudine serves as an antiviral drug that inhibits the replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) within the body. It is utilized in the treatment of HIV, the virus that may lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Additionally, it is administered during pregnancy to prevent transmission of the virus from an infected mother to her child. However, it is important to note that it does not cure HIV or AIDS.
Adverse effects associated with Zidovir's active components may include: headache; fever; general malaise; cough; nausea; vomiting; decreased appetite; or alterations in the distribution of body fat (notably in the arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist).
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience: low white blood cell counts characterized by fever, swollen gums, painful mouth sores, difficulty swallowing, skin lesions, cold or flu-like symptoms, cough, or breathing difficulties; low red blood cell levels (anemia) marked by pale skin, dizziness, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, or trouble concentrating; liver issues indicated by nausea, upper abdominal pain, itching, fatigue, appetite loss, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); signs of a new infection such as fever, night sweats, swollen glands, mouth sores, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or weight loss; chest pain (especially).
